marni

Founded in Milan in 1994 by Swiss designer Consuelo Castiglioni, in collaboration with her business partner and husband Gianni Castiglioni, Marni has become internationally renowned for its experimental collections. Despite no formal education in fashion design, her sharp silhouettes with its bold prints and textures made her one of the most creative designers in Fashion.’

Not Studio created the Marni backstage film for Nordstrom, shot on location in Milan. The film follows makeup artist Pierrick Le Verge as he prepares the model’s spectacular glitter-soaked looks, before catching the lineup of first looks and moving front row for the show itself.

Francesco Risso, during his Marni presentation, compared his fashion vision to an Alice in Wonderland adaptation. Famous hair artist Julien d’Ys added a magic touch to the models with gold and silver dust. The collection was a collage, a mix of macro, micro, and fractal elements. Garments were cleverly assembled from remnants of materials like leather, calico, and scraps of existing clothing, creating a visually striking DIY aesthetic.

Items such as purses and old-fashioned wrestlers’ shoes were made from production remnants, a technique reminiscent of Martin Margiela's work but uniquely childlike in Risso's style. Grand finale pieces were made from scraps of cotton fabric and cut velvet, hand-woven in a Venice factory with looms originally designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Risso described these unique pieces as "our new furs", likening them to holy vestments depicted in Renaissance paintings.

The collection also explored the concept of time's effect on clothing and textiles, employing fabrics that appeared prematurely aged or weathered, as if left too long in the sun or aged by frequent washing. This theme extended to the stage presentation, with editors seated on sagging mattresses and models walking on rumpled calico, enhancing the distinctive, otherworldly vision Risso has for the brand.
